SAB raises breast cancer awareness

The Student Activities Board (SAB) hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness event Tuesday in honor of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Near the Main Mall across from the KMHD radio station, SAB had informational tables about breast cancer as well as activities for students to show that they support the breast cancer fight.

There were prizes handed out by spinning a wheel, with participants winning bracelets, stickers, bead necklaces, lanyards or candy.

At one of the tables there was a donation jar for Barney’s Pantry, a campus service that SAB and the Associated Student Government (ASG) co-sponsors. Money raised for Barney’s Pantry is to help keep the pantry stocked with food for needy students.

The first 20 people who showed up at the event were able to paint their hand pink and put a print on a board and sign their name. They also got a free Breast Cancer Awareness shirt to show their support.

Angelica Ogden from SAB said the event went well and that even though “it was freezing outside,” there was a good turnout.

Also at the event was Kerrissa Lucas, an MHCC graduate from the nursing program and is now an oncology nurse from Kaiser. Lucas volunteered to help MHCC students become aware of breast cancer. Lucas handed out information on how to do a breast examination at home and what someone needs to know about breast cancer.

Lucas also answered any questions about breast cancer. which among women is the second leading cause of death.

Some symptoms of how breast cancer starts include a new lump in the breast, a lump that has changed, change in size or shape of the breast and pain in the breast that does not go away.
