Heat returns to MHCC

MHCC is still ahead of schedule for its Johnson Controls Inc. energy project and heating has returned at the Main Academic Center, Dick Byers, director of facilities management, said Monday.
The 10 boilers that were installed a month ago are up and running, Byers said, and these new energy-efficient boilers will be a better heat source for the buildings. The solar panels being installed will also be a great heat source for the Aquatic Center, Byers said.
“I’m surprised how smooth it’s going. Usually these types of projects take so much time,” said Byers.
Overall, the project is 61 percent complete, he said.
“The project should have started in April of this year, but since there was a delayed board approval for the project and also for the financing, they started late. Yet Johnson Controls is doing a magnificent job,” said Byers.
The solar panels in Aquatic Center are still being worked on, he said.
Another project includes the motion light sensors and, according to Byers, they are still being worked on. The lights will automatically turn off if the lights don’t detect motion. “I’ve been getting e-mails. People get an annoyance with the motions lights,” said Byers. “We are going to adjust the timing for the lights to 20 minutes, but still I can’t believe people don’t move at all for 10 minutes.”
This project will cost $10.7 million to install energy-efficient boilers, solar panels, motion detector lights, coolers and chillers along with more ways to improve energy consumption.
The completion of the Johnson Controls project should be done by mid-winter term, according to Byers.
