MHCC forensics team tries new style as season starts

The MHCC forensics team is working on new debate skills while “maintaining their current level of excellence” following their first tournament last weekend at Lewis and Clark College, according to forensics coach Shannon Valdivia.
“We will be trying out a new form of debate — British Parliamentary Style — in the next few months, so my goal is to get us settled into this new style of debate,” Valdivia said.
The forensics team had several members placing in individual events.
Genia Findley placed 6th in open dramatic interpretation and 5th place in open prose interpretation. Heidi Miller also placed 5th in open prose interpretation while Theron Lee placed 5th in open programmed oral interpretation.
Mark Patterson was a semi-finalist in junior impromptu and junior extemporaneous speaking. Jeff Lewis took 4th in junior impromptu and 5th in junior extemporaneous speaking. Sierra Bomar took 2nd in novice prose interpretation.
“(We did) pretty well considering this is a debut tournament,” Bomar said of the team’s performance. According to Lewis, “Lewis and Clark is a hard tournament.”
Before the tournament, Valdivia said she “felt we’d be competitive. I wasn’t sure with such a young squad that we’d be in the running to win Sweepstakes, but they all came through with flying colors.”
Valdivia is pleased with the group’s chemistry this year.
“This group is very close; they respect and genuinely like each other. They are self-motivated and work a lot outside of practice. It makes coaching so much easier,” Valdivia said. Lewis added, “Most of us even hang out outside (of) forensics team.”
Lewis is optimistic for the rest of the team’s competitions.
“I think the kids on the team this year are willing to work hard and put in the time,” he said.
