MEChA hosts 'Dia De Los Muertos' event

MEChA is hosting “Dia De Los Muertos,” or Day of the Dead event, in the College Center Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be music by Edna Vasquez, as well as many traditional skull decorations and altars.
Dia De Los Muertos is a holiday among many Hispanic cultures that is celebrated yearly at the start of November to coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
The holiday is to remember friends and family members who have died.
“There is a table and you put the food that [the deceased] used to like on it,” said Jonatan Lopez, the public relations manager of MEChA “The belief is at night, the people who have passed away will come and eat the food and things that have been presented,” said Lopez.
With the altars, there will also be traditional sugar skull decorations. Sugar skulls are decorations made from sugar, water, and a hardening agent. The skulls are allowed to dry, and then colored and decorated.
Besides singing, there will be a dance performance by members of CASS, the international Hispanic education program.
MEChA is a Hispanic club that coordinates various cultural events, such as Dia de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo.
