H1N1 vaccination clinic offered Saturday at MHCC

Mt. Hood Community College will receive a limited supply of H1N1 vaccine for a free vaccination clinic Saturday, according to Risk Manager Staci Huffaker.

The vaccination clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Allied Health wing on the north end of campus.

Huffaker said, "We have been allocated 2,100 doses. Both injectable vaccine and the nasal spray (Flumist®) will be available at the clinic."

She said this is a Multnomah County Health Department allocation.

“However,” she said, “the federal government wholly owns the control and distribution of the H1N1 supply chain.”

Brittney Stanley, an MHCC student who works in the Health & Wellness Resource Center, said, “Student nurses and faculty will administer the shots.” In an e-mail Thursday, Huffaker said that Multnomah County Health Department nurses will be there to help out as well.

The high priority groups include pregnant women, children under five, caregivers of children under six months of age, people under 64 with chronic medical conditions and health care workers.

Stanley said no documentation is required, but that bringing a doctor’s note is a good idea.

Asked if MHCC is expecting more vaccine in the future, Huffaker said, “Multnomah County Health Department is receiving shipments weekly that they are distributing based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Health Department guidelines. Please keep in mind that communities around the country continue to struggle with the slower than anticipated production and distribution of the H1N1 vaccine.”
