Perceptions taking submissions

Perceptions, the MHCC literary magazine, is accepting submissions for its annual spring publication.

People interested in writing poetry and short stories will not be the only ones to have their artistic ability showcased. According to MHCC instructor Jonathan Morrow, the magazine also accepts student and community member work that includes photography, visual arts, music and film.

“It’s always great to see just what type of art a student comes up with,” said Morrow when talking about the magazine’s history.

Morrow said, “Another great attribute, aside from being published, is showcasing your art for everyone to see.”

In May when Perceptions is published and the work is put on the magazine’s website, there is a public reading and viewing held, at McMenamin’s Edgefield, showcasing the local talent.

The magazine also helps keep poetry and storywriting alive and relevant in the digital age, Morrow said.

Writing submissions may be entered as hard copies, e-mail attachments or in the body of an e-mail. There is a three-story submission limit for both fiction and non-fiction and up to eight poems entered for submission.

For all other formats of art, such as film and music, these should be turned into the Humanities Department where there is a submissions box.

For photographs, hard copies as well as e-mailed JPEGs are acceptable for submission. For music entries, a hard copy of a disc is acceptable as well as an e-mail attachment; only original songs will be accepted.

All entries will be evaluated by a committee and awarded a prize for participation. Everyone involved will receive a copy of the magazine and a chance of winning a $50 prize in each category. The last day to turn in any piece of art is Jan. 10.

Anyone who may be interested or knows anyone outside of MHCC who may be interested should contact Morrow at Jonathan.Morrow@mhcc.edu or magazine editor Megan Jones at Megamind9@gmail.com.
