The band Thick as Thieves landed at Portland International Airport Wednesday morning and was greeted by Jeannine Retzlaff, ASG director of community affairs, and good news from their manager, Zach Mann.
The band found out that it is leading in a contest to open for Alexandra Burke, the winner of The X Factor, a UK television singing talent show.
Band member Nick Richey said, “If we win, we will give the biggest shoutout to Mt. Hood (Community College)” after he asked the crowd at the Volunteer Fair Wednesday in the Vista Dining Center to text a code so the band can win the contest.
Retzlaff met the band during the summer through mutual friends and suggested sponsoring the band during an ASG council meeting.
“I knew they’d be great,” said Retzlaff.
Lead singer Alex Mercier said, “We’ve only been a band for about six months. We’re getting more and more serious and more and more excited.”
Mann and Mercier met through mutual friends while Mercier attended the University of Washington. “Eventually we both moved out to L.A,” said Mann.
While in Los Angeles, Mercier started to perform more and asked Mann to be his manager.
Mercier was working on a solo project and was looking for a rapper to contribute to one of his songs. Mann’s roommate, Richey, rapped in the car and the shower, according to Mann.
When Mercier asked for Richey’s contribution, Richey delivered a “substantial amount of material real fast,” said Mercier.
The rest of the band quickly came together and started playing in Mann’s living room. “Next thing we know, we had a tour in Portland,” said Mann.
“We didn’t have any songs memorized,” said Richey.
The Internet has really changed the way people discover bands and films, according to Mann. He said the band is in the process of making an album that sounds professional at a low cost.
