Karen Reynolds, MHCC’s manager of environmental health and safety, was honored with the 2009 Community College Excellence Award Nov. 19 at the annual American Association of Women in Community Colleges conference.
Reynolds said, “I was very surprised and honored to be chosen for this award by the AAWCC members because I admire and appreciate the qualities of this amazing group of women and men.”
Reynolds said her work at MHCC “is a wide scope of work, but I want to assure you that the EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) staff do not do it all by ourselves. We have a supportive staff and administration and we all work together to create a safe and healthy environment for the students, staff and visitors.”
Larkin Franks, vice president of instruction, and Nancy Szofran, vice president of research, planning and institutional effectiveness, were semi-finalists for the 2009 Carolyn DesJardins Leadership Award, which is annually awarded to a professional who has demonstrated outstanding leadership.
“It was both an honor and a privilege to be recognized by peers and colleagues for efforts. It was humbling to stand with so many qualified and deserving people,” said Szofran.
Among those people were Franks and Reynolds, who Szofran referred to as “exceptional people who serve the college with dignity and integrity.
Szofran said, “Each has been at the college for a number of years, dedicating their service to the success of students. Many of us at MHCC reach higher because we stand on the shoulders of people like Larkin and Karen.”
