In game one of the tournament, the Saints struggled to find their shot against Centralia Community College scoring only 38 points to Centralia’s 54. The Saints struggled with 17 fouls and only shooting 22.1 percent from the field.
“We didn’t execute,” said Head Coach Larry Davis. “This season, we are holding teams to 51.3 points per game, 30 percent on field goals and 25 percent from three point range and we didn’t do that.”
In their next game, the Saints picked up their play and never looked back beating Pierce Community College 76-49 in the consolation bracket.
Picking up from last seasons success, sophomore guard Brooklyn Bahme scored 16 points, five assists and three steals. Chipping in for the Saints was also freshman guard Emily Bando who had 12 points with three steals as well.
According to Davis, a key role for the team is at the center position with returning center Katie Smith who had eight points and nine rebounds for the Saints who last season averaged over 10 rebounds a game.
“Emily will be key for us,” said Davis earlier in the season. “But we also need Katie to play as well as she did last season.”
After the win against Pierce, the Saints took on the Blue Mountain Community College Timberwolves with the Saints winning 71-52.
In the game, sophomore Brittany Yates played her best game of the season scoring 12 points and adding six steals to the girls 19 total steals in the game.
Also having a big game for the Saints was sophomore guard Shawnelle Campbell who scored 15 points and had three steals. Smith also had another great game according to Davis scoring 12 points and nine rebounds.
“That is what I love about this team,” said Davis. “Instead of a 1-2-3 punch like a lot of teams have, we utilize our depth and everyone can have a great night.”
Winning the tournament was conference rivals Clackamas Community College who won the tournament over Umpqua Community College who is also in the Southern Region Conference. Currently Clackamas sits at number one in the NWAACC polls with Umpqua in fourth.
“We are not thinking about stuff like that,” said Davis. “It is not so much the seeding of where we are but that we are improving our record with every game.”
Coming with improving their record, the Saints also have a few things that need to be ironed out according to Davis.
“It’s a growing process,” he said. “We can always get better. We are working on a lot of thing right now. Ball control, making smarter decisions so we have less turnovers and our offensive execution needs to still be worked on. But like I said it’s a growing process and we will improve as the season goes on.”
The Saints have had a long break since the Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament that Davis is ready to take on the grueling schedule the Saints will have over winter break.
The Saints compete today in the Bulldog Classic at Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, Wash., which runs through the sixth. The Saints play against Whatcom Community College at 3 p.m. If the Saints win, they will compete at 5 p.m. Saturday. If the Saints lose, they play at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
After the Bulldog Classic, The Saints travel to Pasco to face off against Columbia Basin Community College on Dec. 11 followed by Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Wash., on the Dec. 12. They then travel to Mt. Vernon Dec. 18-20 to compete in the Skagit Valley Tournament followed by a matchup against Yakima Valley Community College Jan. 2 in Yakima, Wash.
“This is the best chemistry my team has ever had,” said Davis. “This is definitely the best squad I’ve ever had to coach.”
