College Center elevator repair to continue
While maintenance on all the campus elevators is winding down, the elevator in The Keg still has a long way to go, Director of Facilities and Maintenance Dick Byers said this week.
“The hydraulic shaft located 40 feet below ground which runs the elevator burst and had a fluid leak,” Byers said. “It will take a while to fix the problem.”
Byers said replacing the shaft will cost the school more than the original bid of $26,000.
“There are so many unforseeables in this project that it has already cost us $2,000 over the original bid and with this type of project I’m sure there will be many more unforseeables we will have to pay to fix the elevator,” he said.
According to Byers, it is just too hard to set a date when construction will be over.
“It is just too hard to figure out a specific date because of all the work and costs that we can’t set a date of when construction will be done,” said Byers.
Students who use the Keg elevator have had relatively few complaints about how long the repairs are taking, according to Liz Johnson, coordinator of disability services.
“I had 15 students who were concerned when more than just the Keg elevator was out,” said Johnson. “But technically, the school is in ADA compliance so there is really nothing we can do.”
According to Johnson, she would only be worried if they do not fix the elevator any time soon.
“As long as they are fixing it, people (with disabilities) won’t complain about it not being operational,” said Johnson.
