ASG to interview record high applicants for 2009
The Advocate
A record number of applications have been filed for MHCC Associated Student Government positions for next year, according to President-elect Bradley Best.
With approximately 65 applications for 34 open positions, “some people are going to get heart-broken,” Best said.
In previous years, the ASG would receive about 45 applications for positions, according to Best, but this year he spent a lot of time meeting with minorities on campus as well as high school students who plan to apply to MHCC for fall term.
“Student government was doing more things on campus this year so they were more visible,” said Director of Student Life Robert Cox. “We didn’t promote it (the application for positions) any differently than we did last year.”
About 50 percent of the people currently involved in student government put in an application to stay another year, Best said.
The deadline to submit an application for a student government position was May 15 and the results will be announced June 1, according to Best.
This year there will be a two-day, group interview process taking place May 28-29. There will be a hiring committee but I have the overall executive decision.”
The hiring committee will include Cox, Student Events Coordinator Meadow McWhorter, ASG Vice president-elect John King, Best and several senators.
According to Best, the first group interview will be to elect the Student Activities Board (SAB) chair; that person will then join the hiring committee.
King will have the say over the 15 available senate positions, Best said.
There has been some debate about conducting group interviews, Best said, as some people feel they are less professional. He said the group interviews are fun and the hiring committee gets to see how the candidate reacts with other students.
Best hopes to have all the positions filled by May 29 but the candidates may not know the results until June 1 because he and current ASG President Janine Johnston will be at a two-day meeting with the Oregon Student Association (OSA) announcing the transfer of responsibilities from Johnston and Best.
“I went through my worry and stress, so I think the candidates can wait, too,” Best said.
After the positions have been filled, Best said he is going to generate a binder with all the information about the applicants who were not chosen for a position so that they can be contacted if a position opens up in the future.
“That has been a failure on ASG’s part so far and I plan to change that,” Best said. “I know personally that system failed” and applicants on file were not called first to fill positions that opened up later in the year.
