ASG announces ’09-10 positions; president sets goals for new year
The Advocate
MHCC’s 2009-10 Associate Student Government positions were announced June 1 and, according to President-elect Bradley Best, they have increased diversity for next year and set a record for number of applicants.
“We received the most applications in ASG history,” Best said Wednesday. He added that he thinks “it goes hand in hand with the record-breaking number of voters we had” in this year’s president and vice president election (570 votes).
This year’s ASG applicants were interviewed in groups where, according to Best, they played games that required the applicants to ask and answer questions, get close and to communicate with people they may have never met, all qualities needed in a student leader.
“You get a smile on your face when you’re doing it,” Best said. “You’re not as critical of being in a new environment that you are not familiar with.”
The Wednesday Senate meeting was moved from the Council Chambers to the Vista Dining Center because of the large number of people attending to accept their positions and be approved by the current ASG senate.
The current senate needs to hear each applicant’s acceptance of their position and then approve the elections committees’ selection.
Best said that in previous years each branch of student government would enter the room separately and each member would accept their positions, be approved by the current senate and then the next branch would switch out. This year the whole group of applicants was together.
According to Best, everyone got to hear why each person wanted to join ASG and the qualities they brought to the table.
The executive staff for the 2009-10 year will include Administrative Assistant Jordan Schmidt, Director of Diversity Rosa Sanchez, current senate member Jeannine Retzlaff as director of community affairs, current senate member Nick Liezen as new director of Student Organizations and Clubs (S.O.C.), Director of State and Federal Affairs Kristopher Hughes, and Shade Owloro as director of book consignment. Director of communication will be James Dezellum, director of finance is Bethany Peterman and Holly Corbitt will be director of the Student Activities Board (SAB).
Corbitt joined the elections committee after she was chosen for the position to aid in the selection of the people she would be working with. Other assignments are: Nadia Ruiz, administrative assistant of marketing; Kate Crabbe, receptions event coordinator; is Alexis Cabrera is the new multicultural events coordinator; sports events coordinator is Hector Santos; health and wellness coordinator is Angelica Ogden, and Collin Miller will be the seasonal events coordinator.
The senators who were selected for positions in the ASG marked positions they are interested in, but according to Best they will not have a specific position until they return from the retreat next fall term.
Administrative assistant to the Senate is Tina Bean and the senators are: Rosa Laquerre, Josh Knapp, Gabriela Hernandez, Romeo Diahn, Leah Freeman, Holly Wilburn, Enock Elisme, Charles Cookman, Angela Allegretta, Godson Akubuiro, Yakawel “Yak” Tajada, Andrew Steynor, Raul Reyes, Rae Peres and Jonatan Lopez.
Best said he feels Elisme is a nice addition to student government, Cookman has volunteered with several SAB events in the past and Steynor and Peres have great previous experience.
Each senator will be assigned a section of the campus, such as a department, community outreach, federally granted programs and various centers. Each senator will also be required to join at least one committee.
All student government members will go to the Edith Bishel Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Sandy for their fall term retreat. Best said all ASG members will learn leadership training and do team building exercises as well as get prepared for their position before the term begins.
Best said the 2009-2010 academic year will be different from the current year. The first term will be used to finish plans the previous student government administration set in play, Best said, while winter and spring terms will be implementing changes and accessing untapped resources.
Those resources include English as a Second Language (ESL) students, GED program students, the Early Childhood Center, as well as the Hospitality and Tourism club, Best said.
Best said he will represent MHCC at the Capitol in Salem, with the Oregon Student Associate (OSA), and working on an alliance with other community colleges in Oregon. He said he will continue to fight for higher education funding, capital construction and more access to financial aid.
The student government offices are located in the College Center on the south end of the Academic Center. For more information on student government or next year’s application deadline, contact the College Center at 503-491-7277.
