MHCC Sports Top 10 Sports Stories of the Year

With another successful year in Saints sports, it’s time to take a look back on The Advocate’s top 10 moments during 2008-2009. There were Southern Region titles, NWAACC titles and individual success in every sport. Congratulations on a spectacular year, Saints.

10) Volleyball: After winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007, the team finished in last place in the Southern Region. But co-captains and sophomores BriAnne Culberton and Caitlyn McCall are playing for Warner Pacific College on scholarship next year.

9) Terra Schumacher: Broke the pole vault record for MHCC women with a jump of 12’. Schumacher is undecided where she will attend school next year.

8) Men’s Basketball: Finished second in the Southern Region with a 11-3 record and 22-8 overall. Point guard Earl Jones made first team all-Southern Region and finished with an NWAACCs best 7.10 assists per game. The Saints finished NWAACCs in eighth place.

7) Bryan Donohue: The Saints baseball team finished tied for third place this year at NWAACCs. Donohue was honored as the Southern Region Coach of the Year for the second year in a row in only two years of coaching. The Saints finished with their second best record in league action, 26-4, and 35-8 overall.

6) Women’s Basketball Head Coach Larry Davis and the Lady Saints finished with a fifth-place record in this year’s NWAACCs. The team reached the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.

5) Track and Field: Matt Hart, for three years in a row, has won Women’s Coach of the Year in the Southern Region. Hart guided both his women and men to NWAACCs this year. The women placed third and the men placed fifth.

4) Nick Struck: First team all-Southern Region and first-team all-NWAACC pitcher. Struck finished the season with a perfect 10-0 record on the mound. Struck leaves for the University of Hawaii in the fall to compete in Division-I baseball.

3) Sims Sisters: Co-Female Athlete of the Year at MHCC and both named All-Americans. Catherine won Female High Points Award at NWAACCs after placing in six different events including first place in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.

2) Taylor Ard: Baseball’s Southern Region Player of the Year, NWAACC Player of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year at MHCC. Set six new MHCC records including breaking a 28-year old record by batting average .490. Ard is set to attend Oregon State University in the fall or go pro, depending on this year’s draft.

1) Softball: For the first time in school’s history, the Saints won the NWAACC title behind sophomore Lauren Hadenfeld, who went 5-0 on the mound and won the tournament’s MVP. Head Coach Meadow McWhorter walked away with coach of the year honors.
