Four theater students get intern opportunity
The Advocate
Four theater students will intern with Third Eye Theatre in Portland this summer, working on the show “Grand Guignol.”
According to Cody Brown, managing and technical director for Third Eye Theatre and an MHCC student, Beverly Burris, Jamie Bradley, Christopher Beck and Desiree Stewart will be interning in various areas. Burris will work as head painter and assist in make-up, Stewart will be acting, Bradley will be acting as well as doing lighting and Beck will do lighting.
“I think these guys have talent,” Brown said. “I hope they learn how much fun professional theater is.” Brown added that professional theater is “another world,” but the internships will give “them a little insight that it’s still hard work, but it can be fun.”
When it comes to each of the interns, Brown sees a specific talent in each of them.
With Bradley, Brown likes that “he acts and he does tech (technical) work.”
“That’s what Third Eye is all about – cross training,” Brown said.
Brown enjoys Beck’s passion for theater and added, “He has a real big enthusiasm about theater,” and with his role in lighting, “I though he’d be a great person to do the job.”
Burris has worked with Third Eye Theatre before in two other productions. Brown wanted to work with Burris before because “she did a wonderful job.”
“She’s always willing to do other things,” Brown said of Burris. “I saw her talent as a painter and it makes me feel good to give her the opportunity to get her work out there.”
Burris said she is looking forward to having more creative control on this production.
“I get to pick the color scheme so I get to do my own thing,” Burris said. “I’m looking forward to exploring that and taking the initiative.”
Both Bradley and Stewart will be acting in the production. However, Brown points out both attended open auditions and “they got those roles on their own merit.”
“They’re playing a married couple,” Brown said.
Overall, Brown likes the idea of working with MHCC students because it matches Third Eye Theatre’s atmosphere.
“We’re still young and building, too,” Brown said of the nearly three-year-old theater. “So what better (than) to utilize young, eager students to help them grow as well?”
This will be the first time Third Eye Theatre (located at 4319 SE Hawthorne in Portland) has worked with interns. However, Brown said she hopes it won’t be the last.
“We have some good talent here (and) I would love to continue the relationship with MHCC students,” she said.
Brown said the interns will work until Aug. 1 when “Grand Guignol” finishes its run. The show opens June 26.
According to Brown, the show is “four one-act plays put together to make one show.” The show combines horror and comedy, primarily sexual farces. Brown pointed out that it is also an old style of French theater.
“This is a show I’m having a hard time describing to people,” Brown said. She added, “It was what horror films were based on. We’re trying to resurrect it and put horror back on the stage.”
