With a concept design report and business plan submitted to the President’s Council, Associated Student Government President Janine Johnston said the plans for the game room, or “Keg,” have been set in motion.

Johnston said the concept design report was turned in to the council on May 26, however, the council “asked questions about the research we’d done.” To clarify, Johnston said “we submitted additional information.

“We” is the driving force behind the remodel including Johnston, Student Events Coordinator Meadow McWhorter and Director of Student Life Robert Cox.

While Johnston said the council hasn’t made a decision yet, she said “Our hope is that they give us a thumbs up.” She noted that she wasn’t surprised by the questions and added, “We might have to clarify more because it’s a big project.”
According to the concept design report, the remodel will be done in five phases.

According to Johnston, this is “so we can get the most important work done at the beginning.”

Phase one includes the removal of the wall separating the hallway in the game room from the basement area. This means the lockers along the wall will be moved as well.

“That way when you walk down the stairs you’ll walk into that open space,” Johnston said. McWhorter added, “the first thing we want to do is soften the space.”

This phase will also include the construction of a cafe that serves coffee, Italian sodas as well as food items. The coffee will be supplied by Boyd Coffee Company, according to Johnston, who added “We’d like to partner with them (Boyd Coffee Company) because they’re local.”

A Wi-Fi system would also be installed during phase one.

During phase two, the remodel will include the construction of a stage, currently proposed to be a platform 10 inches high. This stage would be for small events.

Phase three will build a conference room that according to the concept design report is “intended for student use and provide the students with a place they can reserve to have meetings, work (and) study groups, clubs, etc.”

The next phase, phase four, will include the building of countertops for computers. According to the concept design report “These stations would allow students who can not afford their own laptops to access the Internet in a location other than the library.”

The final phase is the “most expensive” according to the report, and would see the redesign of the floor and the installation of a new ceiling. The report goes on to say, “This would completely change the appearance of the room and would increase the student population of the area. The proposed finishes would tie the space together and other parts of the campus and develop a cohesive feel to the room.”
When it comes to the inspiration behind the changes in the game room, McWhorter said “Currently it’s an under utilized space.”

Funding will come from a variety of sources that have thrown their support behind the project. According to the business plan by Cox, McWhorter, Johnston and Senator of Student Life Devon Andrade, the College Center Incentive will give $40,000, $20,000 will come from generated student fee revenue, the Associated Student Government Account will provide $5,100, the Student Organization Council will give $2,900 from their account, while $12,000 will come from operational funding through student funds if the need is there. The total project, all phases included, is estimated to cost $180,316.86 according to the business plan.

“So far everyone we’ve engaged have been excited about the process,” Johnston said. “Moving forward in a united front makes it a much strong project.”
