Portland authors Monica Drake and Cheryl Strayed each read an essay at Monday’s Women’s Herstory event “Women taking the lead by writing for their lives,” which took place in the Town and Gown Room from noon to 1 p.m.
This was the last Women’s Herstory event of 2009.
March is Women’s History Month and each year the National Women’s History Project chooses a theme for the nationwide events.
Because March includes finals week and spring break, the Women’s Herstory committee at Mt. Hood Community College chooses to start the events in the last week of January and finish in March.
Victoria Flagg, committee co-chair, said, “This was a great year.” Committee co-chair Paula Cline added, “we had better attendance” because there were not as many competing events on campus.
This year’s national theme was “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet,” in honor of Rachel Carson, author of “Silent Spring,” and other women leaders in the environmental or green movement.
MHCC’s Women’s Herstory committee chose “Women Taking the Lead…” as their subject for the events, but incorporated the environment in two of the events, “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet,” on Feb. 26 and “Women Taking the Lead on the Environment,” on Feb. 9.
“Women Taking the Lead to Inspire Us” on Feb. 12 had the biggest turnout, according to Flagg and Cline.
This event included the men’s panel and Cline said, “it always seems to be the most popular.”
Except for the men’s panel, there are no repeat events from previous years during the Women’s Herstory series.
The Women’s Herstory committee usually consists of 10 to 12 members and is made up of students, staff, faculty and volunteers.
“I just love the program,” said Cline. “It makes me want to learn.”
Cline said she has helped out during Women’s Herstory events for 10 years and has been a co-chair for two years.
“We try to do something for everybody,” said Cline.
