Mt. Hood Community College will host a Symphonic Band Festival Thursday that will feature as many as a dozen high schools from around the area as well as MHCC’s Symphonic Band.

“This is mostly meant as a clinic for local high schools, but the performances are open to the public as well,” said MHCC instructor Susie Jones who is directing the festival. “The clinicians, who are mostly instructors from other universities such as Central Washington and Oregon State, will be helping out the performers and coaching them.”

Jones said the concert will act as a qualifying event that will send winners to the state band competition held by the Oregon Student Activities Association. The clinicians will also act as judges for the competition.

Freshman Steve Lillegard, who plays percussion for the band, said the band is excited for their final MHCC performance of the term.

“Things should end up turning out pretty well,” said Lillegard. “I know that we’re all focused on putting on a good show, and there is lots of cool and weird material that we’ll be playing. It should be a lot of fun.”

The band is set to perform four songs: “Hounds of Spring,” “American Hymnsong Suite” (fourth movement), “Tempered Steel,” and “Bridges,” which features a narration from Theater Director Rick Zimmer.

Jones said the performance is annual and typically turns out well.

“It should be exciting and fun to have a lot of talented high school musicians playing. I’m looking forward to it,” said Jones. “It should be a good, solid competition.”

The festival begins at 8 a.m. and will run until about 2 p.m. Admission is free.
