The MHCC track and field squad started the season Saturday with strong individual performances at the Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) Spring Open.

In almost every event there was an MHCC athlete finishing in the top half of the competition.

This included five first-place finishes by both the women’s and men’s teams.

The women’s relay team won both the 4-by-400 meter relay and the 4-by-100 meter relay events.

The team members for the 4-by-400 included Stephany Pitts, Kim Tune, Crystal Sims and Catherine Sims.

The 4-by-100 team included Pitts, Crystal Sims, Catherine Sims and Anaiah Rhodes.

All of the women on the team competed in events, but none of the individual performances excited head coach Matt Hart like the 4-by-100 relay team.

“Our women’s 4-by-100 meter relay ran faster this meet than we did all last year,” said Hart.

The third win was by Rhodes, who won the 200-meter dash event with a time of 26.72 seconds.

The men’s performance at the PLU Spring Open was highlighted with wins by Matt Romey in 800-meter dash (2:00.95), Kyle Robinson in the javelin (52.75 meters), and 3rd and 7th place finishes by Micah Strong in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events.

The events included fields of 28 competitors.

“I would say we had athletes represent Mt. Hood well in numerous events. Also, this is very early in the season, so I anticipate all of our athletes to continue to improve,” said Hart.

The next meet for the Saints is Saturday at the Linfield Icebreaker at Linfield College in McMinnville.
