Approximately 120 people filled the McMenamin's Edgefield ballroom Wednesday for the release party of the 44th publication of Perceptions Magazine of the Arts.

This year's magazine is 190 pages and features art, fiction, non-fiction, photography and poetry. One disc of music and spoken word and a DVD of short films are also a part of this year's publication.

Each year students in WR 247, The Literary Publication, spend the full school year sorting through submissions, editing, designing and publishing the magazine.

Former student and Perceptions managing editor Megan Jones performed as Master of Ceremonies at the event, which included a buffet, live music from members of the band Boys Without Toys, author readings of works published in the magazine and a viewing of short films. Category winners were also announced.

Jones said a lot of work goes into creating the publication with 14 editors working, reading, editing and choosing submissions, around two hours each week over the course of the school year.

During her M.C. duties Jones said the editors read all submissions anonymously to avoid bias since an editor may know some of the submitters. In addition to MHCC students and faculty, artists from around the world, like Paris born Ivan de Monbrison, submitted work to the magazine.

Jones said that this year's magazine has MHCC students in each genre.

This year's graphic designers were second year integrated media students Jordenn Luff and Baylee Brown. Luff said every year prospective designers interview with a committee of Perceptions editors to fill the positions.

Perceptions Magazine of the Arts is available for purchase from Jonathan Morrow, in the Humanities department, for $15. Proceeds go toward building next years publication and throwing next year's party. Morrow said the cost of the magazine production on a whole is around $4,500-$5,000. The magazine also receives subsidies from MHCC Associated Student Government.

Category winners from this years magazine are: Brain Forrest (Seattle) for "Seattle Asiatown, The Players," in Editor's Choice Art, Mary Thompson (MHCC Student) for "Roller Coaster," in Editor's Choice Non-Fiction, Eleanor Leonne Bennett (England) "Breakskins," in Editor's Choice Photography, Barbara Genovese (Portland) in Editor's Choice Fiction, Dawn Thompson (Portland) in Editor's Choice Poetry, Jeff Riley (Portland) in Editor's Choice Film and Boys Without Toys (Portland) in Editor's Choice Music.

The magazine will be open to submissions for next year from September to the end of January. Guidelines for submissions are available at www.perceptionsmagazineofthearts.com.
