SUPREME COURT CASE CENTERS AROUND THE ISSUE OF ABORTION

The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to take up a case regarding abortion, which could have major effect on the famous Roe v. Wade decision of 1973. Justices will hear the case named Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, No. 19- 1392 (regarding legislation approved in Mississippi) and are expected to rule within the next year.

This is something that could be a profoundly good step in the right direction for this country, or it could lead to further tragedy.

To expound on that statement, if the Court were to render a verdict that combats abortion, it would be magnificent. However, were the justices to decide in favor of abortion, it would only further the travesties that have been occurring since abortion was legalized. While most people may view this matter as a controversial matter, I for one do not think it is that complicated: To put it simply, abortion should not, under any circumstances, be legal.

As a starting point, there are many arguments for why abortion should be legal. These range from statements such as “It’s my body, and my choice,” to “This pregnancy was not my choice” – the latter statement referring to pregnancy that results from rape (which is another tragedy).

The first statement is not that strong of an argument. In reality, this statement is a double-edged sword. The women who use this argument say that it is their choice whether to keep a baby because their bodies carry the unborn child for the duration of the pregnancy. However, in most cases of pregnancy, these same women also made the choice to use their bodies in a way that resulted in pregnancy.

If a couple is going to choose to have unprotected sex, they should be prepared for the possibility of pregnancy. The other consideration here is the opinion of the man involved. If the man does want to have the child, and the child is aborted, the man will suffer loss. This is not to say that the man should ultimately make the choice, but he should have some say in the matter.

(On the side is the matter of those who do use protection when engaging in the act of sexual intercourse, and yet have a pregnancy result. While it is helpful that they are conscious of the potential effects of having sex, the fact of the matter is that protection does not always work – various methods have significant failure rates. That child is still a human life, and abortion must not be an option.)

The second statement, while not as simple, requires a level of sensitivity. It is horrendous that any woman should have to endure a trauma such as rape. At the same time, when that crime results in pregnancy, there is another little human being inside of that woman. Even though it is terrible that a woman would ever have to endure such an event, it is not the child’s fault that the predator decided to commit such an evil act. While I am sympathetic to women who have endured such a hardship in their lives, I do feel that children that result from it should be given the chance to live. The choice to abort them is no different than one person being sentenced to death for the crime of another.

There are also a couple of things to consider, on the scientific side. First, there is scientific consensus that life starts at conception. If time is taken to do research on this particular issue, it will show that there are a multitude of scientists who agree that life begins at conception.

The other matter here lies with the process of abortion. Foremost is the fact that to abort a pregnancy is to end the life of the child in the womb. Any doctor who would perform such a procedure would be in violation of the Hippocratic oath they took when they became a physician.

Science and legal arguments aside, it must be noted that abortion is just an allaround tragedy for all parties involved, not just the baby. One thing important to consider in this matter is what really goes on in the abortion process. In 2019 a film called “Unplanned” was released. The film is the story of a woman who gets involved in Planned Parenthood. The film shows what really goes on inside these facilities and it is quite shocking. The film also features footage of the inside of the womb during an abortion procedure. This is something that must be seen to truly understand the gravity of the situation.

Ultimately, no one can know what will happen to our U.S. laws until the case is heard and a verdict handed down. It is easy to jump to conclusions based on the current panel of justices in the Supreme Court, but I believe it would be better to wait and watch when the case is heard.

For some the verdict will be a victory, while for others it will be a defeat. All we can do in the meantime is hope and pray that the nine justices who will preside over this case will make the right choice. At the same time, I would caution that, no matter how the cards fall, what is deemed “legal” is not always just.
