Celebrating Journalism

Strong Showing by The Advocate

On Friday, May 2, 11 Advocate staff members traveled to Albany, Oregon’s Linn-Benton Community College campus for the annual ONPA (Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association) Collegiate Day Conference.

Following breakout seminar sessions led by professional journalists, awards were presented to two- and four-year college and university newspapers across the state for exemplary work done in the calendar year of 2024.

The half-day seminar included lunch, and prior to the announcement of the awards, there were three breakout sessions led by professional journalists, including a focus on feature writing with Samantha Swindler of The Oregonian; photojournalism with Andy Cripe, and beat reporting with Penny Rosenberg, Lee Enterprises regional editor for the Albany Democrat-Herald, the Corvallis Gazette-Times, and the Longview (Washington) Daily News.

As for the 2024 competition, The Advocate placed in 18 categories, including five first-place awards, for best special section, writing, series, review, and feature photo.

Below is the list of all the awards, along with some of the team who made it happen.
