February’s Upcoming Events: Pinch Pots, President’s Lunch, and more!

CLAY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
The Clay Club here at MHCC will be hosting a “Pinch Pot Palooza” for two days, starting on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Pinch pots are an age-old, hand-built method for creating pottery – the most simple way possible.

First the hands roll a ball of clay, then a thumb or finger is used to push a hole into the center, and then the thumb and forefinger together pinch up the walls to make a bowl. After the person shapes the bottom and smoothes the edges, it is left to dry. It can then be bisque-fired and glazed.

Artists can create some really interesting forms with pinch pots, and even other organic shapes such as a pine cone. The clay in the image to the right is the base of a pinecone which started out as two pinch pots joined together, so scales could be added.

The pinch pot is a form that can be the basis of many things: The only limit is the imagination. Anyone interested is invited to make pinch pots in the MHCC ceramic studio, VA-6, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 25. One week later, on March 4, also from 1 to 2:30 p.m., the pots will be glazed (fired) in VA-6. There will be extra pots to glaze for those not attending the first session.

Wild Side Club Kayak Night
Being situated in the Pacific Northwest, it’s no surprise that MHCC has an amazing outdoor club. Wildside is the perfect way to take a bit of a breather from homework and get involved in adventures outside while being a part of a welcoming and fun community.

Our meetings take place every other Tuesday (the next one this Tuesday, 2/4) from 5:30-6:30 pm at the Aquatic Center. We always reserve a bit of the meeting time for rock climbing, which we provide all the gear for. This year the club has organized a cross-country ski trip, an avalanche safety presentation, a movie night, and has many more plans upcoming. One of them being a kayak night at MHCC’s Aquatic Center in the pool!

Seems daunting if you have no experience–but do not worry–we’ll teach you everything you need to know. From paddling basics to safety in the water, it’s a great introduction to kayaking. And of course, what the different equipment is and how to use it.

Not to mention, we’ll have an obstacle course to make your way around the pool! So come join us for our free event after school on Wednesday, February 12th at 7:30-9 pm as we learn how to kayak together!
