Looking Ahead to Winter Theatre Production ‘Be More Chill’

Mt. Hood Community College’s Theatre Department is gearing up for its annual winter musical – a lively and vibrant show sure to leave a lasting impression.

This year the chosen play is “Be More Chill” adapted by Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz, based on the original novel by Ned Vizzini. From its use of modern technology to its relatable humor, it promises not to disappoint.

Several cast members have shared their excitement about the upcoming show, which opens on Feb. 23.

Isaac Walker, portraying “the Squip,” said he enjoys the show’s take on classical tropes we all know and love. He also highlighted the references to various popular media. Caleb Unciano, who plays the protagonist Jeremy, expressed his enthusiasm for the big musical numbers. He is looking forward to singing with the entire cast on songs including “Be More Chill” and “The Smartphone Hour.”

These upbeat performances, coupled with impressive choreography, should make the show quite entertaining to watch.

Other cast members approach what makes the show worth seeing, in their eyes, from different angles.

Julia Standley, playing Jenna, is most excited about the costumes. The show features a variety of fun outfits, ranging from regular school clothes to Halloween attire, which plays a sizable role in making the show visually enjoyable. Jayce Jennings, portraying Rich, looks forward to his first full-length solo piece. Fresh debuts from talented actors are always a treat, and their abilities will be on full display.

Leo Decklar, part of the ensemble, is eager about the show’s dramatic ending, which has to be seen to be appreciated. Several other cast members agree that the ribald gags of this show – not suitable for younger audiences – will have the audience rolling in laughter.

It all shapes up as potential must-see material, a rather diverse and immersive experience. Mt. Hood theatre instructor Zach Hartley, the play’s director, has some big plans in the making for making this show memorable.

The performance dates for Be More Chill run from Friday-Sunday Feb. 23-25, through March 1-3. Tickets for Mt. Hood staff and students are $10 and can be purchased through the MHCC Theatre Box Office website or any of the QR code posters displayed around campus. Alternatively, followers can stay updated and obtain tickets through the department’s Instagram and TikTok accounts, at: MHCCTheatre.
