MHCC’s Mock Funeral Service
MHCC’s Funeral Service Education (FSE) department will be hosting its annual Mock Funeral Arrangements exercise on Tuesday, in the Town and Gown Room.
Although the event is mainly for aspiring funeral services directors, it offers a chance for community members to learn more about the process of funeral arrangements. “This can be especially valuable for members of the public who may be caring for an elderly parent or a terminally ill family member and know that such (real) arrangements may need to be made soon,” the program notes on the MHCC website.
The FSE students get the opportunity to put the skills they have learned by arranging for a fake funeral without the added emotional baggage.
According to the FSE department, the job market for funeral directors and funeral home managers is really good right now. Mt. Hood provides one of the only two Funeral Service college programs in the Pacific Northwest. The MHCC department said that it graduates 20-30 students into the field each year.
Individuals interested in taking part in the mock funeral exercise are urged to call the FSE department to secure a time slot for Tuesday in advance. Walk-ins are accepted, but there is no guarantee that FSE students will be able to meet without an appointment in advance.
