‘CREATIVE COLLECTIVE’ REVOLUTION AT MT. HOOD

Founded by MHCC, KMHD-FM (89.1 FM on local radio and also streaming online) has been providing jazz to Multnomah County and the greater Portland area since 1984.

Meantime, Mt. Hood’s KMHD2 currently livestreams music of new emerging artists and hosts student voices in what some would consider a classic “college radio” format.

The latter is about to undergo major changes.

Since the MHCC administration chose in 2020 to eliminate the college’s broadcast study program, veteran instructor J.D. Kiggins and a group of students have been brainstorming new ideas to rebrand the longtime and greatly respected alternative Mt. Hood outlet.

I am among those students – having myself helped to create the Advocate’s first livestream show, “The Advocast” – who now hope to form a unique opportunity for anyone in the MHCC community to get hands-on training working with cameras, “open broadcast” software, sound engineering, and hosting.

Under Kiggins’ guidance, our goal is to bring to campus something we all felt MHCC has lacked: A hub of information, all in one place.

Rather than continue as “just radio,” the reformed outlet will be more than that. The rebranding teams is still in the concept phase. What we doknow is that KMHD2’s former slogan, “It’s a revolution,” will transition to “The Creative Collective: It’s MORE than a revolution,” with a sleek new logo and goal.

The Creative Collective is for everyone in the Mt. Hood community, including alumni. You want to run your own podcast? You’ll be able to sign up for it, on the new upcoming website. The

website will include podcasts, DIY videos on how to sign up for classes, FAFSA and degree audit information, quick links to the MHCC site, student club information, sports news, and more.

Interested persons should be on the lookout for more information on the site’s completion sometime later this year.

Meantime, those with further interest in participating in student media, whether it be starting a podcast, reserving a music block slot, or otherwise getting involved, may reach out to Kiggins with any questions at [email protected].
