ASG TAKES ON THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Mt. Hood’s ASG (Associated Student Government) team is gearing up for the 2020-21 school year – with all activities held online, at least through Fall Term.

The ASG Executive Council Meetings will be held 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, and Student Activities meetings will be held from noon to 1 p.m., also on Wednesdays. These meetings are open to all students, and their Zoom links can be found on the ASG website (mhcc.edu/asg).

Since all important events will be held virtually, the ASG team is working diligently to give students these opportunities in a different way this year, said Rozina Lethe, student leadership and engagement coordinator for Mt. Hood.

“They are working on amending typical events that happen in Fall Term, such as Welcome Back, Constitution Day and Voter Registration, to virtual events that can still be engaging for students,” she said.

There are also possible virtual fairs and orientations in store.

Emily Lee, ASG’s student organizations & clubs coordinator, is working to be able to provide not only a virtual club fair, but also orientations for any students that may be interested in continuing a virtual club or starting a new one, said Lethe. “It is our hope that we can continue to provide support for our current clubs on campus through our new virtual style and continue to expand our offerings for students’ different interests,” said Lethe.

There currently remain many open positions available in ASG. Any student interested should contact Lethe or check the ASG webpage for details.

“This is a great opportunity to get involved with ASG, give back to MHCC and help advocate for student needs during these unprecedented times,” Lethe said. ASG and SA meetings are open meetings, where any student may attend and share their opinion or ideas.

“This year’s team is really looking forward to hearing from students and giving them the best experience possible,” said Lethe. ASG is also creating a survey sent to students to better understand all student needs and what they are hoping for ASG to do this year to help advocate for them, she said.

If there are specific events that students would like to see happen at MHCC, they should reach out to Truc-Lan, the student activities coordinator, with their ideas. Student Life, as a whole, has other great opportunities as well for Mt. Hood students, such as the Engagement Award Program, which was launched last year. Students can earn this certificate for volunteering while at MHCC. To get learn more, visit: www.mhcc.edu/Engagement-ServiceAward.

Also under the Student Life umbrella are The Advocate student newspaper, forensics team (speech and debate), Clubs & Organizations, the Multicultural & Diversity Resource Center, and Rho Theta (honor student program) that anyone can get involved in, all while still attending school virtually, said Lethe.

Students interested in any of these programs should reach out to their respective advisers (found via MHCC email): Daniel Ernst, Shannon Valdivia, Lethe, Ernesto Vasquez and Katrina McNeal.
