Bikes now targeted for crime on campus

As April faded to May, MHCC has experienced a spike in bike-related thefts.
Three bikes and a separate bike seat were stolen between April 20 and 29 and May 1 and 3.
The main areas where the thefts occurred were at the bike racks near AC1000, AC1300 and HPE. According to an email sent out by Manager of Public Safety Wayne Feagle, the thefts are estimated to have taken place between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Feagle included some tips on how to keep your bike safe: lock your bike frame to the bike rack with “an alloy hardened U-shaped lock,” and try to attach the front wheel to the lock as well. According to Feagle, the bikes that were stolen were locked with a chain and padlock.
Feagle added that any parts on a bike “that are quick-release,” such as seats, should be taken with the owner. He also recommended to keep a record of your bike’s serial number.
