Horror Fans can scream this spring with these upcoming movies

Horror fans everywhere have a lot to get excited for in 2024, between whispers of some anticipated projects to confirmed productions with concrete release dates that have been long awaited!

Here, I’ll cover what I’m most excited about in the year ahead.

First on the list is “Late Night with the Devil,” a film that premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW, an Austin, Texas, festival centered around film, music, and interactive media) from Australian sibling directors Cameron and Collin Cairnes. The story is presented in “found footage” from a master tape of a late-night television talk show that was set to air on Halloween Night, 1977. The teaser trailer Recently released on social channels, the teaser trailer is chilling, and I cannot wait to see it in theaters starting on March 22!

Next up: “Immaculate.” Sydney Sweeney stars as an American nun who makes a pilgrimage to the gorgeous Italian countryside, with expectations of joining a distinguished convent. She supposedly discovers a horrifying secret at the convent. If you read my review of “The Nun II” way back in Issue 1 of The Advocate (last Oct. 6), you’d know how excited I am for this one. It is slated for theatrical release on March 12 at SXSW and in theaters nationwide on March 22 (double feature with Immaculate and Late Night with the Devil, anyone?!).

Third on the list, “The First Omen.” I’m not going to lie; the original “Omen” film scared the socks off me! The idea of demonic possession and anti-Christ children is a genre that has always chilled me to the bone.

I watched the trailer for this film when I went to see “Poor Things” (you BET I wrote a review for that one, too, in Issue 7, Feb. 9) and it had my full attention. As an up-and-coming, experimental, art-house filmmaker myself, this trailer sang to me like a siren to a sailor at sea.

Much like Immaculate, it reportedly follows an American woman sent to Rome to uncover horrible, terrifying, gruesome secrets at a church. It also serves as a prequel to the OG 1976 “The Omen” film, and is set for an April 5 release in theaters.

Due in late summer is a remake of a Dutch film that was released in 2022, “Speak No Evil.” I’m interested to see how and why its backers chose to remake such a recent picture that had earned rave reviews from horror fanatics and critics. The story follows two couples on a lovely vacation that eventually devolves into unimaginable psychological horror. It is reportedly to be released Sept. 13, and is backed by Blumhouse productions.

Finally, the one I am the MOST excited for: “Nosferatu” – more specifically, Nosferatu, written and directed by Robert Eggers with cinematography by Jarin Blaschke. If you’re not familiar with those names, you may know this director-cinematographer duo’s other works, such as “The Witch” (2015) starring Anya Taylor-Joy, “The Lighthouse” (2019) starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, or “The Northman” (2022) with Taylor-Joy co-starring with Alexander Skarsgård.

If you haven’t realized by now, I’m a HUGE fan of Eggers films. I am beyond excited to see his edition of Nosferatu, the story of a cryptic, monstrous vampire who becomes enamored with a beautiful young woman – set to be released on Christmas Day, no less!
