LILYBELLE: MEETING THE NEW ASG PRESIDENT

Incoming ASG President LilyBelle Moir

LilyBelle Moir, recently named the new ASG president for the 2020-21 school year, is excited to make an impact here at MHCC.

Last year, she was involved in Associated Student Government (ASG) at Clackamas Community College during Fall Term; she transferred to MHCC in the winter. During her time at CCC, she was an officer in the ASG promotions department.

Moir said she transferred to Mt. Hood for a variety of reasons: Although she loved Clackamas, MHCC is a closer drive and just 10 minutes away from her home.

“I have a lot of friends that go to MHCC,” she added.

Moir was appointed – to succeed 2019-20 leader Collin-Kazu Lewis – after the COVID-19 campus shutdown disrupted the usual student body election of ASG president and vice president held each spring at Mt. Hood.

She said she hopes to “be a voice for the college” in her time in ASG, and in continuing to make the college a diverse community. She strives to do this by holding school assemblies and events, if possible, as well as incorporating different cultures and connections in the Mt. Hood community.

Her favorite thing about ASG is its community and family feel, as well as members working with one another.

“It’s like a big group of brothers and sisters,” she said.

Moir, 17, will be a high school senior this year, graduating with her high school diploma and an Associate of Arts transfer degree, completing her studies through a dual-credit program at the Clackamas Web Academy.

She was born in Portland and raised in Welches, near Mount Hood, and lived there until she was 11 years old. She has resided in Gresham the past seven years, but often drives to Welches to visit family. She also enjoys visiting Hawaii and Florida.

Moir attended Summit Learning Charter her freshman and sophomore year of high school, before switching to the Clackamas Web Academy for her junior and senior years.

She is thinking about majoring in Global Studies, and hopes to pursue a career possibly in education or the ministry, with a possible minor in Spanish.

“I definitely want to pursue a career where I can travel and serve as a missionary or working for organizations such as UNHCR or UNICEF,” said Moir, naming two United Nations outreach organizations.

“I have a huge heart for ministry and working with people who are living below the poverty line, especially with refugees. I have been volunteering at Snowcap Community Charities for three years now, working in client services and helping interpret Spanish when needed and the charity holds a dear place in my heart,” she said. “(I l)ove the people and my work there so much.”

Moir also has embraced the sport of taekwondo.

“In my spare time, you can usually find me at Dynamic Martial Arts (studio in Gresham) where I am training to become a second-degree black belt (I currently am a first-degree black belt). Love the sport and volunteering there as an assistant teacher,” she said.

After Mt. Hood, she hopes to perhaps attend Multnomah University or George Fox University. She is also considering University of Hawaii at Manoa, in Honolulu.

Looking farther ahead, Moir said she loves traveling and teaching and hopes to do this in the future. She looks forward to encountering different cultures and adapting and learning; she now works at Hood View Adventist School with preschool and pre-kindergarten students teaching Spanish. She also works in the school’s aftercare program for K-8 students.

“I love my job there and definitely plan to return in August!” Moir said. “(I love my students/coworkers dearly… I’m so blessed to know each of them.)”

Moir said her favorite meals include breakfast foods: She enjoys crepes, waffles, and manicotti (Italian pasta with ricotta-stuffed noodles), especially. Her mom is Norwegian, and she enjoys Lefsa (Norwegian flatbread) that the natives there bake.

Her musical favorites include musical theater and Broadway hits. Among her favorite musicals are “Newsies,” “Aladdin,” “Wicked,” and “Dear Evan Hansen.”

During this summer, Moir is working in ASG for MHCC, as well as taking summer courses. But there’s still some time off for fun.

“I will be visiting Honolulu early August to check out University of Hawaii at Manoa and stay with family,” she said.
