Literature and Social Justice visits Mt. Hood

“You will leave the event feeling inspired and ready to go out and create change with your own talent and voices,” said Melinda Bullen, MHCC’s Diversity Resource Center director, in reference to the Literature and Social Justice readings and workshops that happened on campus Tuesday and Wednesday.

The event was made possible by multiple student clubs, as well as the student resource center. In attendance were editors of Octavia’s Brood, a collection of social-justice themed science-fiction stories “who are actively involved in movements for social change,” according to Bullen.

Presentations weren’t limited to just readings, though. The group also showed a conceptual video they prepared and hosted a writing workshop later in the day.

On the second day of the event, MHCC hosted Sister Outsider, a local slam poetry duo who also read from their work, then led a writing workshop on Wednesday.

The two-day conference was organized as part of the Mt. Hood Humanities Department’s “The Mouths of Others” guest speaker series.
