MHCC TO LOSE TWO CO-CURRICULARS NEXT YEAR

Since most everyone is working and learning from a distance these days, it is easy to overlook what is going on behind the scenes. But important budget and program planning continues at Mt. Hood.

In a process that has been ongoing since October 2019, MHCC’s student government leaders have completed the process of composing a budget for the college’s co-curricular activities in the 2020-21 academic year.

The end result of this process is a 7% decrease in funding for all co-curricular programs, and complete elimination of funding for Forensics (Mt. Hood’s speech and debate team) and KMHD, the streaming radio station for Mt. Hood.

At a meeting on Feb. 27, the Associated Student Government (ASG) held a meeting to allow representatives from each co-curricular program to pitch their preferred budget for next year. Following some additional meetings, the proposed budget – which includes money from MHCC student fees – was included in the final MHCC operating budget plan approved by the District board on April 15.

Formal approval of the MHCC budget is expected in June.

  1. I really hate seeing the Radio station go! It is great advertising for our beloved College. and give experience for students to learn how to run a radio station!

  2. I am extremely sadden by this news. Mhcc is a extraordinary school with outstanding instructors and most admin as well. I have had the best experience through out my educational growth. In fact if budget cuts would not have cut the wheely program I would have continued to attend Mhcc. I know budgeting is no easy task, nor are the decisions being made for the future of MHCC. If there are not the programs available to students that would have enrolled at mhcc, there will be no student life, no student life means no MHCC. I feel there could of been a better solution to fixing the budget other than continuing to cut programs. What about being more mindful of misuse of college funding? I feel Mhcc has a unstable future, also I feel Administration does not value student life and the irreplaceable instructors and faculty. I honesty love Mhcc and I love learning because of the support I have been given by students and All the tutoring center. I am no math mathematician nor have a huge college degree. I am a single mom whom has made Lincoln ‘pennies’ scream to support my family and give them the best I could. I honestly feel there could have been more choices to consider than to just keep cutting programs.

Our forensics teams win awards year after year, and KMHD is a Portland icon. This is truly a loss for our school!
