Nicole Johnson-Moses, the newly appointed ASG (Associated Student Government) president at Mt. Hood, is excited about this upcoming year, with several goals to pursue.

She’s been attending MHCC since last spring, and this is her fourth term at Mt. Hood. She will most likely graduate in the spring of this year. She was officially announced as the new ASG leader at the District Board meeting on Nov. 18. She succeeds LilyBelle Moir, who resigned from the position in late summer.

“I started training in the summer, and officially began serving as the Representative of Community Outreach at the start of Fall Term 2020. I applied for the Presidency once it was vacant and moved to that position late Fall Term,” said Johnson-Moses.

Over the Winter and Spring terms, she looks to focus on mental health assistance and have this as a team goal for ASG, as well as highlighting counseling services available to students.

Johnson-Moses has many priorities for this year. She hopes to work on the interdepartmental processes and other programs that operate at the school. She also aspires to find what leads to success and failures, and connect students to each other, as well as successfully building relationships. Other specific goals of hers include engaging students on platforms, hearing from the student body, and collaboration.

As for examples, ASG hopes to hold an energy event with the Energy Trust of Oregon, as well as offer a poetry event, she said.

Johnson-Moses’ passion for leadership led her to want to help others and find more ways to do good, she said. This is what inspired her to apply for the Community Affairs and Outreach Representative position at ASG, which she really enjoyed, and then applying for the ASG president position.

Now age 27, she attended Bakersfield High School, in California, and graduated in 2011. She went to California State University-Bakersfield but decided later that a community college was a better fit for her.

One thing that stood out to Johnson-Moses about MHCC is the mental health programs it offers. She hopes to get her AAOT and major in psychology, and transfer to Portland State University for social work studies and graduate school.

She said her favorite thing about MHCC is the focus on students and the resources that help them.

Aside from her passion for leadership and her roles as ASG president, other hobbies and interests include cooking and reading. She said she also loves musicals and vegan foods, including coconut curry. Among her favorite musicals are “Hamilton,” “Beetlejuice,” and “Dear Evan Hansen.”
