RECOGNIZING THE MHCC PLAYERS: OUTSTANDING SAINTS ATHLETES
With our current COVID-19 situation, the MHCC athletics department is juggling all the changes brought by the canceling of all spring sports schedules, and facing what might come next.
Two significant developments occurred this last week – one of them unexpected, another a welcome highlight.
Saints women’s basketball head coach Jeremy Vandenboer, coming off another strong season, has accepted a position at the four-year Linfield College in McMinnville.
Mt. Hood announced that Vandenboer’s assistant coach, Alex Guevara, has been promoted to the top job and will lead the Saints in 2020-21. Guevara also has assisted the Saints men’s basketball team.
Vandenboer took over a sputtering Mt. Hood women’s program coming off a 7-21 year and proceeded to record a 51-35 record over three seasons. That included three straight trips to the NWAC championship tournament.
In March, the Saints were victorious in a dramatic first-round tournament game when the NWAC suddenly postponed, then canceled, the playoffs over coronavirus concerns.
Meantime, Mt. Hood has found time, as usual each spring, to recognize its outstanding athletes for the 2019-20 school year.
