Saints claim softball title

Comeback 8-7 win over Bellevue

It’s time to raise another championship banner in the Yoshida Events Center!
Mt. Hood won yet another Northwest Athletic Conference softball title on Sunday in Spokane, Washington, downing Bellevue Community College, 8-7, in extra innings.

The Saints (39-12 for the season) finished the four-day championship tournament undefeated, with five straight wins.

It’s the first NWAC softball championship for fifth-year Mt. Hood head Coach Brittany Hendrickson. And it’s the sixth for the Saints since 2009, who rang up five titles in an eight-year span under Coach Meadow McWhorter.

Their final game was anything but easy, however.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning, before Mt. Hood began a determined comeback. The Saints finally pushed across the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, sending the 7-7 contest to extra innings.

Finally, with two outs in the eighth inning, first baseman/centerfield Hope Burke doubled – her third hit of the game.  After catcher Hailey Davis was hit by a pitch, outfielder Mckenzie Kosmicki singled, sending Burke home with the winning run.

The Advocate will add follow-up coverage as more details become available.
