Saints Clawed by Panthers

The MHCC men’s basketball team  dropped the ball, figuratively, at their home game against Portland Community College on Jan. 24, losing 107-88.

The Saints started out strong, maintaining a slim lead over the Panthers with the first half ending with the home team ahead, 46-42. However, things soon took a turn for the worse, with the Saints losing their lead quickly.

Within the first 10 minutes of the second half they had eight fouls called against them, pushing the Panthers into the bonus and contributing to the widening gap between the two teams. In all, PCC made 27 of 35 free throws for the game.

I don’t know what changed in the second half, exactly. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Saints were still recovering from the ice storm that hit the area the previous week.

Coming back from time off during our winter ice storm, Mt. Hood’s women’s basketball team was not playing to its full potential on Jan. 24.

I have witnessed these Saints players play their hearts out, and to lose a slow-paced game, 64-51, to the Portland Community College Panthers was a shame to see.

I will say the Saints fought with a great defensive strategy throughout the third and fourth quarters. The Panthers struggled to for awhile to build a lead on the Saints, but Mt. Hood couldn’t keep its momentum. With another home game on Monday and two more soon after, I hope to see the women bring the fury that I have seen them dish out in the past.
