Student Elections Process Underway

The Associated Students of Mt. Hood Community College – ASMHCC, the student government body – is recruiting “energetic, enthusiastic and motivated” students to become leaders and inspire positive change across MHCC during the 2024-25 academic year.

If this opportunity appeals to you, look no further, but do not delay! One critical deadline arrives this coming Sunday, Feb. 11. Here we offer a concise rundown of the processes and requirements of joining the student government team.

Overall, members of the student government are responsible for representing the entire student body of MHCC. They serve as liaisons between the students and not only the college administration, but also between students and state legislators.

The student government is comprised of just two elected positions, Student Association President and Executive Vice President – plus 18 non-elected positions designated as representatives and coordinators.

Please note: Students interested in either of the two elected positions must submit their online application, certificate of academic release, candidate contract, and election platform by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11. However, due to the January campus shutdown, the deadline may be pushed back. Those who miss the deadline may still run as a write-in candidate, but several restrictions apply. Candidates will campaign throughout February, and a voting week will be held in March.

Meantime, non-elected positions are appointed through an interview process and remain available until they are filled. There is a priority deadline for applying for those positions, but it has not yet been decided this year. Interviews will be conducted starting in the spring after the election has concluded.

Be aware that serving in the student government is a massive undertaking and should be treated as a job. Refer to the table on the right to view the time commitment involved in, and corresponding compensation of, holding the various offices.

All student government members are also required to complete at least six credits during each of the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms while maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, both before and after appointment.
