Student Voices Sought for MHCC Podcast

A live podcast is coming to the MHCC College Theatre on Dec. 8 – one that is a bit different from the podcasts you may listen to on your commute to school, however.

Brady Carey, a communications instructor at MHCC, will be hosting nearly an hour of interesting presentations, all of them centering around one idea, “The Message.”

I sat down with Carey to ask more explanation of the central theme for this 7 p.m. event, the sixth podcast in his series. He said that sometimes the message we intend is different from how the audience decodes it. The audience can take away a very different message then what you, the communicator, meant.

Throughout the Dec. 8 event, Carey will explore how the presenters attempt to communicate their message(s) to the audience, and how the audience feels about them. Among the content will be performances of poetry, music, improvisation, and more.

One interesting side of the podcast/event is that people in the audience will be able to question the presenters. This makes for an interesting dynamic where the audience and presenters feel connected through open dialogue. Those unable to view the event in person or catch it live via Zoom (https://mhcc.zoom.us/j/93071419628) can watch it afterward by emailing Carey for the recording ([email protected]).

This will be Episode 6 of Carey’s COMM-Talk podcast and he plans to continue this podcast once a quarter. He said he wants to hear from even more voices on campus, and students are welcome to reach out to him to look at participating in the next episode.

Carey also is looking for more students to take ownership of this project, wishing this to be a safe and supportive place for all performers to tell their story. He hopes to build a website that will host all episodes, adding that “communication” is part of every field studied here at the college and the podcast is open to all perspectives.

Anyone interested may contact Carey.
