Students Dance at Finals Week Rave

If you entered the Student Union at the MHCC Gresham campus on March 13, instead of the usual calm you would be greeted with sound of bass bumping throughout the building. An event called “Blow Out Finals” turned the Student Union into a day club, complete with a dance floor, and offerings of food and mocktails.

Starting at noon, lines for the food, an assortment of Chinese cuisine, wrapped through the building. As for the mocktails, they did not disappoint. In the pursuit of investigative journalism, I tried all three available. The first one I gave a shot was “The Barbie,” which included a mix of strawberry lemonade and Sprite soda, topped with a strawberry and glitter. This drink was a great refresher.

The next mocktail was “The Magic,” a mix of lemonade, Sprite, and butterfly pea flower. However, my favorite mocktail, without a doubt, was the one labeled “Beach Day.” With salt encrusting the rim of the cup, lemonade and Sprite filling it to the brim, and finally, topped with a slice of lemon, it was a home run. The duality between the sweetness of the Sprite and lemonade, opposed to the salt, made for an interesting and winning combination. While a bit of a risk, this drink pulled out all the stops – and succeeded.

On the dance floor filled with members of the student body, people grooved to music ranging all the way from the “Cupid Shuffle” and “Cha Cha Slide” to club hits such Flo Rida’s “Low.”

In order to get the full journalistic experience (again!) I had to join the dancing, so when the Cha Cha Slide came on I jumped in. Although I haven’t danced since middle school, I would like to think I did alright here (despite tripping on the balloons that covered the ground).

Overall, I would say the ‘Blow Out’ event was a success, with a good turnout from Mt. Hood students. The student body can look forward to more such fun events this Spring Term, including the end of the year celebration, called the Barney Bash, scheduled on May 30.
