Track and field shows promise in Washington

The Mt. Hood Saints men’s and women’s track and field teams fared well last weekend in Tacoma at the Shotwell Classic held at the University of Puget Sound.

Despite competing against a number of NCAA Division II and -III athletes, the Saints had stellar performances.

Sophomore Caitlyn Safley ran the women’s 100 meter dash in 12.98 seconds for a fifth-place finish. Safley then improved her position in the women’s 200-meter dash taking second place with 26.33 seconds. Freshman Courtney Andre earned second place in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1.05.91. The Lady Saints’ runners, including sophomore Whitney Warren, freshman Marley Yates, Safley and Andre, earned firsrt place in the women’s 4 x 100-meter relay and won second place in the 4 x 400-meter relay race.

The Saints women continued to thrive, with Yates taking second in the high jump with a 5-foot, 5-inch mark. Rounding out the top-five performances was freshman Shanice Lakes, who took fifth place in the shot put with 11.40 meters.

The men’s team joined the women in outperforming other junior colleges, including Green River and Everett, also competing.

The men’s team standout-of-the-day went to freshman Devon Larson, who finished in third place in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with 15.98.

For meet, the Saints women finished the meet in fifth place overall, and the men finished in 10th place overall.

Today, the teams head to Western Oregon University for the John Knight Twilight meet. On April 18 and 19 in Portland, the teams will compete in the Lewis & Clark Invitational, at Lewis & Clark College on Friday, and at Concordia University on Saturday.
