Mt. Hood’s ASG and its multicultural director hosted a lip-sync battle and encouraged all students and passers by to participate in the Main Mall of the Gresham campus on April 7. Applause and laughter rang out as brave students took turns preforming in groups, doing solo performances and pulling other humorous moves to some of their favorite jams.

Students Tiffany Purvis, Yvonne Arellano, and Sydney La Voie performed a few times and helped get the ball rolling as the lip-sync battle was warming up.

Purvis showcased dance moves to a number of songs including “Don’t Stop Moving” by S Club 7 and “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera. Purvis received extra hoots and hollers for her choice of “Halloween Town” from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

“It’s a lot of fun to be yourself and to be crazy,” said Purvis about her performances.

La Voie got into her own groove with a few songs, including “Cold Hearted” by Paula Abdul and “He Loves Me, He Loves You Not” by Andrea Giamporcaro. “I didn’t plan much of the choreography, but it was fun to perform with my friends,” said La Voie.

Among other songs she performed, Arellano did her own punk rock version of “Skater Boy” by Avril Lavigne. “When I first heard of it (the lip-sync battle) I was not thinking about doing it,” she said. “I was like well, might as well do it myself… even if I don’t win I still had fun.”

ASG President Seth Albert performed a well-executed lip sync and dance routine to “Mambo No. 5” by Lou Bega that received a large applause.

The crowd was temporarily stunned when Emily Wintringham of the Advocate performed a death metal version of Psycho Stick’s “The Alphabet Song.” For a moment it seemed nobody knew what to think. There was a collective cringe which quickly turned to wide-eyed stares, which was followed by laughter.

Cierra Wade, ASG multicultural coordinator, and Katrina Write, seasonal coordinator for the group, regularly plan and host events to bring MHCC students together through a common bond of art and entertainment.

ASG’s next event is the “Throwback Dance and Costume Competition,” scheduled for Thursday, April 21.
