‘Seedfolks’: Growing a Better Future

Last month (Nov. 17-18), the MHCC Theatre Department put on an inspiring production of “Seedfolks,” a one-act play based off the book written by Paul Fleischman.

The story follows a diverse group of people working towards a common goal: building a community garden. The choice of the play was inspired on the future of Mt Hood’s own on-campus community garden. And the production was both beautiful and inspiring as it handled topics of racism, teen pregnancy, differences in culture, and much more.

Directed by Zach Hartley, the play was held in the smaller Studio Theatre here on campus, for a more intimate experience. Immediately upon entering the audience could see the set garnishing the stage. Not only was the design remarkable, but it shaped the scene for the audience. When the show started there was garbage, an old mattress, and no plants growing in the garden. When it ended, there was hardly any garbage, and a bustling garden. There were even parts where the actors interacted with the audience.

The show as a whole was funny, and quirky. While it had hints of serious topics and themes, the director himself praises the production for its comedy and said he thinks of it as the best part of the show. I would have to agree.

Joseph Sauer, the actor for “Homeless #1” and many other characters, said the best thing about the show was how goofy it was. “It was fun,” he shared with me after the performance.

Monifah Nyoike, cast as Jenny and many other characters, said her favorite part of the show was “getting to work with Zach,” and many of the castmates agree with that statement.

Seedfolks was an amazing experience, and I and The Advocate are eager to see what the Theatre Department does next with its upcoming shows.

Preparations are already starting for the Winter Term musical “Be More Chill,” based on a book written by Joe Tracz. Performances are scheduled for Feb. 23-25 and March 1-3, 2024. See mhcc.edu/theatreboxoffice for show details.
