We Have No ‘Beef’ With This Year’s Emmys

Everyone loves an excuse to talk about their favorite new TV shows and celebrities, but not everyone wants to sit through three hours of interviews and surface-level comedy sets that drag on just a little too long – so I’m here to give you the rundown on who won what at the 2023 Emmys event aired on Jan. 15.

The most popular and decorated television show this year was HBOs “The Bear.” The show and its cast members absolutely dominated the Comedy genre, with 13 nominations and 10 total awards taken home. Ayo Edibiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Outstanding Supporting Actress/Actor in a Comedy Series respectively, and co-star Jeremy Allen White was awarded for being an Outstanding Lead. The show’s creator, Christopher Storer, took home two awards for Outstanding Writing and Directing, driving the show to earn its place as the Emmys Outstanding Comedy Series of the year.

Moving on to our next show, “Beef,” which earned eight awards out of 13 nominations in the Limited/Anthology category. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong brought home the bacon and the awards for Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress, respectively, for this limited series. The creator of “Beef,” Lee Sung Jin, was deemed the Best Writer and Director in his genre, corroborated by the series being awarded the title of most Outstanding Limited Series of the year.

While Beef was able to swallow up most of the awards in its category, Paul Walter Hauser in “Black Bird” and Niecy Nash-Betts in “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” were the winners when it came to Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress in a Limited Series.

Next up came a familiar Emmy participant, logging in with six awards out of 23 total nominations, “Succession.” While it did win for Outstanding Drama Series for a third time, the longstanding show has had better years when it comes to honors for its cast. Sarah Snook was awarded Outstanding Lead Drama Actress and Kieran Culkin took home his third award as Outstanding Lead Drama Actor. Behind the scenes, Mark Mylod took the prize for Outstanding Directing in the Drama category and Jesse Armstrong was similarly awarded for his writing on the show.

Those three shows were definitely the biggest deals of this year’s award presentation, but they don’t encompass the Emmys in its entirety.

So, let’s do a quick run-through of other notable awards. Elton John won the Outstanding Live Variety Special category for his performance at the Dodger Stadium as the final stop on his “Yellow Brick Road” tour, making him the 19th person ever to claim an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award (the treasured EGOT career milestone).

Reality reasserted itself when “RuPaul’s Drag Race” won the award for Outstanding Reality Competition, taking back its crown after failing to win the category for a fourth year at the 2022 Emmys.

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won two awards as an Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, beating out long standing competitor “Saturday Night Live.” “The White Lotus” has been a popular series since its inception in 2021, but only one of its cast members was able to capture an award this year: Jennifer Coolidge won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and stirred up a lot of press in her acceptance speech where she said, “I want to thank all of the evil gays.”

With that, the 2023 Emmys are officially over and we can start looking to current broadcasting/streaming and make our predictions for next year.
